Epiphone AJ-220SCE

Choose full-body, Venetian or Florentine cutaway

There is more than one reason to prefer a guitar with a missing shoulder or not, and there are different reasons for choosing a Venetian or Florentine cutaway.

When buying an acoustic guitar, pay close attention to the shape of the case, to which the sound owes a good portion of its character.

Regardless of whether you prefer the abundant lines of a dreadnought, the smaller ones of a parlor or an evergreen orchestra model, one aspect in particular is a question for many musicians: the presence or absence of a missing shoulder.

In its most conventional form with the two specular and rounded sides, a guitar is called “full-body”. For several reasons, however, one may wish for a variant with a box portion literally “cut away”. To be sacrificed is the lower “shoulder”, where the left hand (right for left-handed) clashes the body of the instrument in an attempt to reach the higher frets. The “missing shoulder” is also called “cutaway” and can be essentially of two types.

Tip: If the cut describes a smooth and soft profile, it is called Venetian cutaway (Venetian), if instead it creates a pointed shoulder there is a Florentine cutaway (Florentine).

The preference for a cutaway model is not limited to aesthetic choices. The motivations that make striving for a missing shoulder guitar are essentially functional and quite obvious: a guitar without a part of material at the highest fret allows easier access to the most acute registers.

Not least, the economic factor should be considered: with its curvilinear design, a Venetian shoulder can be obtained by folding a single band similarly to what you would do with a full-body. The angle of the Venetian instead requires more work, consisting in the gluing of a piece of wood apart to describe the profile of the cutaway and in the reinforcement of the tip (which now also serves as a joint) with a strip.

A final aspect to orientate in the search for a guitar is that, more often than not, the cutaway configuration in acoustics is reserved or in any case combined with electrified models (usually marked in the catalogs by the CE suffix).

Guitar with a missing shoulder

Some believe that a guitar with a missing shoulder loses a small portion of the harmonic content due to the smaller size of the case and the shape that subtracts a few centimeters from an area where the frequencies could have rebounded and amplified. This would make the sound of a guitar with less articulate, drier cutaway. Someone compensates for this constructive choice with deeper speakers, someone else prefers it as more balanced overall.

Others argue that a missing shoulder does not subtract a sufficient dose of vibrations such as to have a minimal response in practical application. If you add to this that wood – as a living material – can make two guitars significantly different even with the same technical characteristics, it is really difficult to objectively measure which changes to the sound give a cutaway respect in the presence of both shoulders. In doubt, there are those who simply prefer full-body guitars if his style does not include excursions to the higher frets and who, vice versa, relies on the cutaway in anticipation of a use more focused on solo.

Tip: If, however, the choice fell on a guitar with a missing shoulder, it must be considered that almost all agree that the choice of a Florentine rather than Venetian shoulder does not lead to significant tonal variations.

The first thing is the neck.  It’s really the most important thing to talk about because if the neck is not well planted or if it’s too heavy the guitar is impossible to play. Ovation Elite Standard 2778 AX

Ovation Guitars, or more simply Ovation, is an American company that mainly produces acoustic guitars. Ovation guitars have a special design, with the bowl shape have a truly unique approach, and this form produces a very solid sound. The Ovation Elite AX is one of the first electro acoustic released by the brand using nylon strings, not steel as it was usual in their models.

With the Elite Standard 2778 AX from Ovation’s Standard Elite series you have the system called “Scalloped X bracing” which further increases the sound. For less than $1000 has a fir surface.

Taylor 110CE

The Taylor 110ce is an electro-acoustic guitar belonging to the 100 Series. It is a dreadnought in all respects with solid spruce top.

The back and the sides are in laminated walnut: this type of material enhances the mid-frequencies and remains very versatile. The body is with a missing shoulder, to allow easy access even to the last frets, while the electronics are the new Taylor ES2.

Yamaha LL16D ARE

Based on the LL16, the LL16D Dreadnought differs from the more economical version due to the intricate abalone inlay on the body, the headstock and the hole. The electro acoustic guitar Cordoba GK is a perfect combination between high quality woods and good electronic system. This guitar is built with a special selection of woods; the sides and the back are built with Hindu Rosewood.

The top is built with European Spruce; the neck is built with Mahogany and the fingerboard with Indian rosewood: this combination of wood gives us deep and serious sound, all notes are clearly understood.

The ESP LTD TL-6 is an electro acoustic guitar with an innovative design, slim body but with good resonance, with good electronic components, easy to play and with a balanced sound, highly recommended for guitarists of intermediate or professional level.

The neck is fitted to the body, similar to the construction of traditional acoustic guitars.

Best Acoustic Electric Guitars Under 2000

Among the guitar brands that produce acoustic guitars in an industrial way, the American Martin is definitely the most prestigious brand name, especially in the country-bluegrass, which boasts a long history of excellent instruments that have accompanied the most roaring years of rock music, country, folk, and blues.

Main brand “competitor” is the Gibson brand, chosen predominantly especially in accompaniment by many folk-solo artists such as Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen. Other very expensive brands, of great prestige, are among others Taylor Guitars, Lakewood Guitars, Maton, Larrivèe, and Bourgeois.

In the construction of an acoustic instrument, the quality of the wood that is chosen plays a fundamental role. Different types of wood are used for the body, the neck and the fretboard. Each has its own physical characteristics, timbres, aesthetics, and the costs can naturally vary a lot depending on the quality of each piece.

Tip: A fundamental factor is the maturing: a freshly cut wood will not only have unsatisfactory tonal characteristics, but will tend to deform itself during the natural maturation process.

It is good to clarify that, having to deal with characteristics such as the type of veining (wide, fine, regular, irregular), the seasoning, the guitar bracing, the type of wood will have a reduced weight or non-preponderant in the economy overall sound of the acoustic instrument.

Tip: In other words it is not possible to assert how a guitar will sound only based on the type of wood used, but it will be possible to give only a general indication. For convenience, we divide the woods according to their use, depending on whether they are used for the construction of the soundboard (top) or for that of the back and sides.

Martin Performing Artist Series GPCPA4

In collaboration with Fishman, Martin Performing Artist GPCPA4 combines high-quality craftsmanship with modern amplification priced around $1500. This is one of the most convenient guitars of the Performing Artist series where instead of mahogany the African sapele was used for the back and sides of the guitar.

The Fishman F1 electronics is a simplified version of the PA3. One of the best features of the Performing Artist models is the brand new thin neck. Interestingly, the pitch spacing has been changed to 55.6 mm; the difference with the D-18 and MAC-28 models is slight but noticeable. The battery life of the analogical F1 is 200 hours. A key feature of the design of the GPCPA4 is its depth, which increases the capacity of the sound chamber by offering greater volume and projection.

The wood standard used is impressive; the GPCPA4 is a robust guitar. This guitar is hoarse with a fairly warm tone, when it is amplified it becomes spectacular with a full and vigorous sound. In terms of playability, quality and affordability, Martin has still produced an excellent electronics worthy of inclusion in the PA series.
